What's New? Treatment refractory eating disorder patients with comorbid mood disorder guided to effective treatment with rEEG testing
Author: Greenblatt, et al. Presented at APA, 2008 10 treatment-refractory ED patients with a co-morbid mood disorder. 2 were treatment non-compliant and dropped out. The remaining 8 ED patients (4 anorexia, 2 bulimia, and 2 NOS) had failed an average of 5.3 prior medication trials. Patients averaged 38.8 on baseline 21-item HDRS. 4 patients had 6-month follow-up assessments and 4 had two-year follow-up assessments. Patients also averaged 3.5 hospitalizations in two years prior to rEEG guided treatment totaling 588 inpatient and 33 partial days. 6 of 8 (75%) were rated as much or very much improved at 8 weeks whereas all patients had such ratings at 6 months and 2 years. HDRS scores decreased significantly (p<.OOI) to an average of 16.5 at 8 weeks; 11.0 at 6 months; and 11.3 at 2 years. 6 of 8 (75%) had a 50% or greater HDRS reduction at week 8; 8/8 at 6 months; and 4/4 at 2 years. During follow-up (mean=23.5 months), the 8 patients averaged .75 hospitalizations following rEEG guided treatment with a cumulative total of only 21 inpatient and 0 partial days. An unexpected finding was that 4 out of 8 (50%) times, rEEG recommended stimulant medication which is often associated with diminished appetite and weight loss which did not occur with these patients.
